This course expects to develop a big picture for understanding why do we need to track backward to the original economic rationale behind the developmental strategies for the industries and how such strategies would vary by the essence of industries themselves as well as the interaction among the stakeholders, including government, therein. This course will be comprised of several blocks: Industrial organization, structure-conduct-performance framework, topics on a variety of industries including agricultural and food sector, economic regulation and antitrust, and multinational enterprise. During the beginning weeks, it will go through some of the key concepts for industrial organization before digging into the domain of industrial development. Next it will explore the structure-conduct-performance framework and apply it to address a diverse set of industries. Third, it introduces and considers the economic rationales behind the regulation and antitrust that are key to the development of industries, which achieve economic or social goals or both. Last, it briefly covers the function and organization of multinational enterprises (MNE) using the microeconomic thinking and tools.
